this is an exhibition

2023Physical installation, organza print

What is a gallery space if not for every exhibition that it has and will house? The soul of a gallery is a curation of past shows that have once existed in the space, and will continue to grow even richer with every new exhibit, person, pedestal or lightbulb... Everything comes together to converge into a singular plane of existence. This is an exhibition.

As you step into the gallery, your presence becomes a dialogue with the past, a fusion of perspectives that blurs the lines between then and now. You, the viewer, are invited to contemplate the past, be present in this space, and make yourself a part of this show. This is our exhibition.

The artwork is made specifically for the Thinteractions exhibition at the Visual Arts Centre from 26 December 2023 to 1 January 2024, with the challenge of creating a ‘thin space’ in mind. All the artworks presented are part of the exhibition space and in turn, the exhibition and space itself has become the artwork. The gallery takes the form of a simple rectangular space and this was taken into account to make a site-specific work.

Images of precious exhibitions and pop-up events are compiled from the Visual Art Centre’s social media platforms, specifically the ones that have been taken from one end of the gallery with a one-point perspective. These images are overlaid and composited together, and then printed onto sheer organza fabric.

The sheet is suspended in the middle of the gallery and when it is viewed from the right distance and angle, the image lines up perfectly with the interior of the gallery space. Viewers are able to imagine the presence of figures or canvases from the past, while also becoming a part of the work itself in the concurrent exhibition.
