Rage, rage against the dying of the light
2026Crochet book
Featuring excerpts from Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas, each page is made entirely by hand using a 0.5mm crochet hook, thread and time. Experimenting with crochet as a form of print, the work foregrounds slowness and labour; the process challenges the logic of printing as a means of mass production.
This work is a handmade book, entirely crocheted stitch by stitch over the span of a month. It features part of the poem titled Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas from the 1950s.
I was particularly interested in doing the opposite of what print and books are usually able to do, which is to be produced quickly and widely distributed. I chose to explore and push how we can recreate the anatomy and features of conventional book through the filet crochet method. This requires the design to be simplified and pixelated in a way.
It is definitely an inefficient and counterproductive way of "printing" but in the process of being forced slow down, there is a lot of time spent with internalising and reflecting upon the words and building familiarity and connecting with the tactility of the thread.
THIS IS NOT A BOOK
A book is a collection of recorded information, meant to record and disseminate information. Broadly classified into different categories, its definition is shaped by content, format, and purpose. This exhibition challenges the assumption of visual representation as identical to the represented object, examining the ‘book’ as a contested space where boundaries between form and function blur. Here, artists propose alternate forms to the 'book', reinventing it as an ever-evolving medium.
