itchy hands

2022Yarn, wire mesh, nylon fishing line, conductive thread, LED strip light, Bare Conductive Touch Board

“itchy hands” is a comforting space that creates a warm feeling of safety that we all desperately yearn for as we go through the process of growing up. Under the shelter of the installation, the audience can take comfort in the feeling of the space and reminisce on happy, fuzzy memories. The draping yarn offers a surprise, and the audience is invited to interact with the work by gently touching it – to reach out, feel their surroundings and invoke a sense of childlike wonder once again.

Having learnt how to crochet since I was 8, I have received endless comments about this skill, especially the ability to create things that are so invitingly tactile. Through this project, I revisited what this medium and material meant to me, how I could use it to reach out and engage my audience, and how I could use it to further develop my art making process. By combining slow art and technological hardware, it has opened new possibilities and senses to explore for interactivity and immersion in my future artworks.
